EDIT: The team have done so well with the challenge that since this was published the target miles has increased from 3300 to 5000.

This April and May we’re putting the spring into our step and heading outside to clock up miles for our chosen charities. As one team we are aiming to walk/run 3300 miles from 5 April – 30 May.

Why 3300 miles?

Inspired by the remarkable Captain Sir Tom Moore and the £33 million he raised for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday. It seemed to us that 3300 was the perfect number and a great challenge.

Our walkers/runners have split into teams of three to give the challenge the competitive edge it needs to get the most distance covered. And the competition is heating up, as over 790 miles were covered in the first week. That’s like walking from our Berkhamsted office to Edinburgh Castle AND back!

Mental and physical health benefits

As well as being a great challenge for the team, getting outside and moving your body has so many physical and mental health benefits which are especially important in the world we’re currently living in:

·        Getting outdoors boosts your immune system by increasing your vitamin D levels.

·        Exercise can help reduce stress by lowering your cortisol levels (stress hormone) and releases endorphins that can help reduce anxiety.

·        Improves sleep quality.

·        Exposure to natural light can boost your mood.

·        Reduces mental fatigue and improves concentration.

·        Improve your photography skills like some of our team…

So, whilst we are reaping the benefits of getting outdoors and improving our physical and mental health – both of which may have been impacted by the pandemic – we’re also aiming to raise a total of £5000 to split between our chosen charities. With charities reporting a ‘devastating loss of funds’ due to the pandemic and the strain it’s put on them, it’s more important than ever to give back to these amazing organisations.

Our charities

We have been supporting these four charities for over 3 years:

DENS – homeless shelter that also offer mentoring and training and a way forward for adults struggling in society.

The Pepper Foundation – a small charity raising money to help fund children's hospice at home nursing care.

Thomley - enhance the well-being of disabled people through delivering activities that helps develop the skills they need to run their day-to-day lives.

The Swan Youth Project - works to support young people, by providing an environment in which their personalities and life skills can be developed.

We would love your support so if you would like to help us hit our target amount you can donate here.
