Celebrating 20 years with QCS Staffing - Spencer Trigg
Cast your mind back to 2005, it felt like the future was
upon us; the iPod Nano and Shuffle were
introduced to the world, the first ever video was uploaded to YouTube (called “Me at the Zoo”), the
number one in the UK charts was U2 with ‘Sometimes you can’t make it on your
own’ and topping the box office was Hitch and our founder; Stephen Trigg was
looking to grow his staffing agency, Quanta, even further.
So, in early 2005 after returning from university and several years in the hospitality industry whilst living in York, a young Spencer Trigg took his father up on a job offer. With the stipulation that he would join as a trainee, learning the ropes and gaining as many skills as possible; promising his father that if he wasn’t right for the job he could let him go (but Stephen would have to let mum know).
Well,
it turns out he wasn’t just ‘right for the job’, he was fantastic at it and 20
years later he is joint CEO with his business partner, David Broome; Quanta is
now QCS and over 125 employees strong, with team in the UK and USA.
We sat down with Spencer to reflect on the past 20 years and what he loves most about QCS Staffing.
Why did you join QCS Staffing?
With my father Stephen Trigg, originally founding the business in 1992, my 1st soiree at Quantum (as we were known back then) was in 1994 where my older brother Wesley and I worked evenings doing data inputting. This was long before the likes of the internet and emails, candidates would either post or fax their CVs to the business, we would then scan them in and re-format in our template ready for the business to use the following day. I reckon we were paid about 50p an hour!! Then my second stint was after my 1st year at Uni, I came back and worked with the IT/Marketing Manager for 2 months.
Then in late 2004 my father and I were having a conversation about business and were discussing the future, when we agreed that I would join as a trainee. I wanted to ensure that I started as a junior so I could learn from the bottom up, get to know all the tricks of the trade, listen to everyone around me and just soak it all up. Fortunately for me, I LOVED IT and proved to myself I was OK at this thing called recruitment.
I have had the pleasure of working with Spencer since 2010 and have always been impressed with his drive and determination for excellence. He leads by example and always sets the bar when it comes to living and working within our company values. He is people centric and always makes decisions with our people at the centre of everything he does. I continue to learn from Spencer to this day, he has been a great colleague and indeed boss over the years, cheers to your 20 years Spencer, congratulations on an incredible milestone." – Ben Alger, Chief Sales Officer
What is your role now?
I’m now Joint CEO with my business partner David; having completed a Management Buy Out from my father in 2022.
My role entails multiple work streams but to be honest the most important and, in my eyes, the coolest, is to ensure QCS remains an awesome place for colleagues to come to work, to thrive, to passionately deliver brilliant services to our clients and candidates, to do it with a smile on their face, and to do it as a team.
"I have had the pleasure of working with Spencer for 15 years and I can honestly say I have learnt so much from him. Spencer truly lives by our values and consistently brings fresh ideas and innovative solutions, driving the company forward. He makes well-informed decisions with confidence, ensuring the company’s growth and stability. He invests time in mentoring and coaching employees, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development. Not only is Spencer an inspiring leader at QCS, he is also great fun to work alongside! He brings a sense of humour, fun and quick wit to the workplace, creating an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere." - Lauren Potter, Chief Operating Officer
What do you love most about your job?
The people. It's not just the amazing team that we have within QCS, because we have got a tremendous team and it's constantly growing, but you're constantly engaging with candidates, with clients, with suppliers all from different geographies and cultures around the world.
I get to travel to different places, frequently visit our US office in North Carolina, join colleagues on business trips around the globe, and equally spend time at our UK HQ that in turn means no day is the same, which is why I am one very lucky chap.
The other key reason I love what I do is seeing where our team have taken the business. Especially over the past 15 years. We’ve created new opportunities within the business, introduced new divisions to work within, implemented new technology. There is never a dull or slow day, week, month or year! There is no horizon, we stay agile to seek new opportunities and regardless of how much we’ve grown, our aim is to retain that entrepreneurial mindset to foster growth.
What is your proudest moment at QCS Staffing?
Looking back on 20 years, 3 really stand out to me.
Hiring people within our values. I believe that we’ve really improved this over the past 10/15 years. We really do hire people that fit the culture of the business. That doesn’t mean that everyone is the same, quite the opposite, we really celebrate uniqueness, and we know it’s critical to have voices from all different backgrounds to contribute towards our business! Having colleagues value the company’s (which is actually their) values is paramount to us and the result of that is our attrition rate for the past 5 years trends at just under 10% and that stat I am proud of.
Setting up our US operation was very special. We set the wheels in motion for this project before the Covid-19 pandemic and the team that supported in this worked tirelessly to make it happen and we moved into our 1st office at the start of 2023. Then this year we relocated to our new (and much bigger) office leaving the team there with so much more room to grow, with an aim to at least double our headcount this year in the US.
Whilst there are many more proud moments, the final achievement that really stands out is completing the MBO (Management Buy Out) from my father. It not only gave him the opportunity to start new adventures but also for QCS to remain privately owned. David and I can keep doing what we love, investing in people, delivering great service to our candidates & clients, and loving the adventure that we’re all on.
"What an incredible milestone to achieve by Spencer. Simply brilliant. It cannot be overstated Spencer’s influence on QCS over the past twenty years and the global staffing industry as a whole. Spencer has been central to all that makes QCS such a brilliant organisation, from his expertise in our industry sectors, to overseeing the evolution of our Finance and Operations to support our significant growth over the past two decades. And of course, in more recent times the introduction of our operation in North Carolina. The time and expertise invested by Spencer is one of the reasons we find ourselves today as an industry leader & one of the fastest growing privately owned Staffing organisations in Europe and North America. On a personal note, it has been one of my life’s highlights to work with Spencer for the past twenty years. His boundless energy, willingness to help others, support for our staff and growing QCS is the cornerstone of our organisation. Congratulations Spencer on this milestone. Thank you." - David Broome, CEO
