Peter Thoroughgood is one of the newer members of the QCS Staffing team, bringing with him a wealth of experience in recruitment. He joined us in 2017 and has already had a significant impact on establishing and growing our life sciences permanent placement division. But how did he get here, and what’s coming next on his QCS Staffing journey?
“I’m the first person in QCS Staffing to have a sole focus on permanent recruitment”
Heading up our newly-established permanent recruitment department, Peter’s been busy since day one of joining QCS Staffing. Focusing on the booming life sciences sector, he has a pivotal role in shaping the full-time offering at QCS Staffing and developing this over the coming years. Our focus has traditionally been more on contract recruitment, and while we’re continuing to provide resourcing services in this area, we noticed significant demand from clients for longer-term solutions. Thanks to his background, Peter was the perfect fit to make this happen.
“I support existing clients, offer contractors permanent roles and build up our perm database”
Peter’s day is contact-heavy, with mornings spent calling clients to catch up on briefs and requirements, and afternoons spent focusing on QCS Staffing's permanent candidate network. Our internal candidate database is integral to this, and is constantly utilised to identify and engage with professionals who may be interested in the right position. The team also uses LinkedIn, job boards and networking to engage with existing clients and candidates, as well as attracting new ones.
“QCS Staffing appealed to me as I wanted to work in life sciences recruitment”
After moving on from the motor trade, Peter cut his teeth in telecoms recruitment before moving into ICT, where he recruited for solutions architects, network architects and others within cloud computing. The ever-growing nature of the life sciences industry appealed to Peter, who wanted to work in a sector that was fast-paced and had a positive impact on the wider world. He was drawn to QCS Staffing's structure and growth alongside to the business focus on developing talent from within. The opportunity to build a permanent function from scratch was also a major pulling factor. Over time, Peter hopes the permanent requirement within QCS Staffing will expand to include new divisions for other business sectors.
“We get given the tools we need to succeed”
Peter has immersed himself in the life sciences industry, supported by QCS Staffing's dedicated training programmes and the helpful, communicative attitude of the entire QCS Staffing team. Peter says the training is from director-level down, where everyone feels comfortable asking questions and furthering their knowledge with the business providing the tools and techniques team members require to succeed. The rest is up to the individual.

Six months on from joining QCS Staffing, Peter’s enthusiasm for the role and business has only grown. The wide range of clients he works with across pharma, bio and medical device industries ensure his knowledge is spread wide across the sector, and he says every single opportunity is unique. The European spread of clients adds further interest to his role. Peter also highlights the company culture as being integral to his career enjoyment. He’s made real friends at QCS Staffing, and enjoys working in an environment that is bustling and high-energy while still maintaining a family feel.
“I’m proud of how the permanent division has already grown”
Peter’s already made a big impact at QCS Staffing, making a number of placements including one in Europe with a brand-new client. This shows there is a significant requirement for permanent resourcing within life sciences, which Peter is pleased to support. With roles in Sweden, France, the Netherlands, Ireland and across the UK, we can expect to see continued growth as the year goes on.
